У меня такое же чувство с Пратчеттом, например, было. Не потому, что его книжки богаты стилистическими оборотами даже. Чтобы его понять стопроцентно, нужно, не просто быть англоговорящим, нужно быть англичанином (в крайнем случае, валийцем или шотландцем). Однако ж его полюбили не только в Америке (где разве что "flavour" заменили на "flavor", но и в России, в переводах на русский.
Так что я тут могу ошибаться.
